Dan Colman Podcast Takeaways & Timestamps

I am going to start writing these recaps/takeaways/random words for each of the podcasts that I do. I know that there is a pretty good number of people out there who would like to watch certain parts of the podcasts or that don’t have the time to devote 1-2-3 hours to watching or listening on ITunes to a podcast and I want to try to make these more accessible for those people in the future. I have ideas related to putting up the best parts from each episode, putting together a 20-30 min version of each pod, timestamping all podcast episodes so that people can expect them to be there regularly and putting these write-ups out for each episode so that people can also expect to see these regularly. I might succeed at all of this and I also might fail at all of this. I end up getting lost in 10 hour poker days a bit too often and not much productivity outside of that ends up taking place 🙂 ¶   **I am still learning to be a professional writer, I will learn by the 500th thing I write**   Onto the podcast with Dan. The feedback on this episode has been really really good so far. I’ve met Dan a couple times in the past but I really wasn’t sure what to expect going in. I never...

Random Thoughts about the GPL after Week 1

It has been one week of the Global Poker League so far and now we have 145 more weeks of play to go 🙂   I’m sad the sportify version of poker is equal to HU/6max SNGifying poker. I’m sure AD was in the lab and decided this was the only version that could work. I think the GPL will be successful no matter what anyone on poker Twitter, TwoPlusTwo, and Twitch say. It will be popular for some of the same reasons that Phil Hellmuth is popular. It will almost be successful by default. They are linked up with Twitch, Pokerstars and PokerCentral at the moment and I would imagine they will be linked up with anything related to poker in the upcoming future. They have over 400 hours of content planned so far for online and live play. There really isn’t anything else competing with it and outside of watching streamers on Twitch, there really isn’t anything else going on that someone who is a fan of poker can watch so often. I think that most of the Twitch poker audience will give it a first look and go back to the regular streamers they watch but over time give it 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th…. etc looks and at some point GPL will become their go-to streamer to watch. It will always be 1st or 2nd most popular stream...

Sustaining motivation and work ethic in poker in 2016

(This was initially supposed to be something else but then the idea of poker work ethic came into my head and I started writing about it. If I go back and edit this I probably won’t want to put it out so if there might be some non GTOptimal writing in this 🙂 )   I’ve been thinking about this a lot over the past few months. As I get older and become interested in doing more/learning more about different things in life, it is much more challenging to control the motivation and work ethic for poker that I once had. I think it must be a natural thing that as we start to focus on many things, our ability to truly focus on one thing is hurt and the ability to maintain that becomes an entire skill in itself. Being able to dedicate 95% of your entire mental focus on one thing and excel at it is something that is attainable but shifting that to 30-50% mental focus and the ability to excel is an entire other challenge in its own which might require an extra XX% of mental focus from an entirely different place. I am confusing myself a bit typing this out but these types of thoughts have been going through my mind often recently. I think most people run into this well before they enter...

Motivation and Focus

I’ve been sitting in my hotel room here in Dortmund, Germany for the past 5 or 6 days trying to figure out what I want to do or what direction I want to go with my life. I thought that I was having trouble being motivated but after I started writing this, I think the problem is more of direction with a mixture of motivation.   For the past 8 years I’ve really only played poker. My life, obsession and the way I identified myself was as a poker player. The direction you can go with poker was always...
